Group insurance founder to receive award

Charitable work earns honour for man who has been labelled a ‘visionary’

The mainstream media may not always present insurance brokers in the brightest of lights, but one man has definitely bucked that trend.

According to a report in the Edmonton Journal, Dennis Erker, co-founder of Fairley Erker Advisory Group, which is one of the leading group insurance brokers and estate planners in Canada, is to be presented with a medal from Canadian Governor-General David Johnson.

Erker is picking up the award for his work in helping to create Valour Place, which is meant to help with medical treatment for injured soldiers, for which he raised $10 million. In addition, Erker has helped families and first responders in Edmonton and is currently raising funds for an endowment fund that is meant to help Valour Place be self-supporting.

Speaking to the publication, Erker commented the award was a “big surprise” and said that he felt he had gained “too much attention” from the labour of many.

It is not the first time that Erker has earned recognition. Last year he was awarded the Alberta Order of Excellence and labelled a “visionary community leader”.

The award will be presented at Rideau Hall as part of the Sovereign Medal for Volunteers on April 12.
