Sun Life donates $10 million to charitable causes

About $8 million of the $10 million donated by the insurer went to Canadian charitable organisations

Sun Life donated more than $10 million to charitable causes last year – about $8 million of which went to organisations in Canada.

According to Sun Life’s public accountability statement, 54% of the insurer’s charitable donations went to health-related causes. Another 24% was donated to arts and culture organisations, 14% to social services and 6% to educational initiatives. Sun Life has been especially active in raising awareness about diabetes, according to the Insurance Journal; it has donated more than $13 million to the cause since 2012.

Sun Life employees and advisors raised a good deal of the funds. The company has a matching gifts program through which it matches employee donations dollar-for-dollar up to $500. According to the Insurance Journal, Sun Life employees gave a total of $429,113 in 2015, which in turn generated a further $358,500 in matching funds.

Sun Life also supports employees and advisors who participate in health-related fundraising through its Teams for Health program; this year, the program generated $237,319 in grant money.
