Untapped – and growing – market for life advisors

Today, more than 10 million Canadian children and adults have this disease or will develop it but lack adequate insurance plans

Canadian brokers are missing out on a fast growing market to offer coverage to sufferers of diabetes. Today, more than 10 million Canadian children and adults have diabetes or prediabetes and the number of Canadians living with diabetes has more than doubled since 2000, and will grow by another 40% by 2025.

The Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) said Monday that almost another million Canadians are living with type 2 diabetes but don't know it and have not yet been diagnosed. The organization called for urgent government action to address gaps in the care and resources available, including an appeal for suffers to get insurance coverage.

The CDA said that many suffers, particularly those with lower incomes, do not have adequate insurance coverage for eye and dental care, specialist foot care, prescription medications and supplies.

But high out-of-pocket costs and limited public plan coverage compromise the ability of Canadians to manage diabetes; with some choosing between paying for food and rent or buying medications and supplies. But this suggests a significant market exists for the right products.

According to the CDA, Canadians with diabetes are not receiving the recommended level of care and timely education to prevent complications. The organization is calling for action to help prevent amputations; reduce the number of cases of diabetes in Aboriginal communities; eliminate stigma and discrimination against people with diabetes; and improve support for children with diabetes in school.
